Job Title: Protection officer

Location: Borno/Yobe

Duration: 3 months (with possibility of extension)

Objective:

The Protection Officer will lead the implementation of protection activities, ensuring the safety, well-being, and dignity of vulnerable populations, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities. The incumbent will work closely with stakeholders to assess protection needs, develop response strategies, and advocate for the rights of affected individuals.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Protection Assessment and Analysis:
  • Conduct protection assessments to identify risks, vulnerabilities, and protection gaps among target populations.
  • Analyse data and information collected to inform the design and implementation of protection interventions.

2. Protection Programming:

  • Develop and implement protection projects and activities in line with identified needs and priorities.
  • Provide direct support and assistance to individuals and groups at risk, including legal assistance, psychosocial support, and referrals to relevant services.

3. Advocacy and Networking:

  • Advocate for the rights and interests of vulnerable populations, including access to essential services, legal protection, and durable solutions.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, UN agencies, and other stakeholders to strengthen protection mechanisms and coordination.

4. Capacity Building:

  • Conduct training sessions and workshops on protection principles, human rights, and international humanitarian law for staff, partners, and community members.
  • Build the capacity of local authorities and community leaders to respond to protection concerns effectively.

  • Conduct regular patrols of the premises to detect and deter unauthorized access, vandalism, or safety hazards.
  • Monitor security cameras, alarm systems, and access control systems to ensure the safety of the premises.

2. Incident Response and Reporting:

  • Respond promptly to security incidents or emergencies, providing immediate intervention and reporting to relevant authorities as necessary.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports and maintain a log of all security-related activities.

3. Access Control:

  • Manage access to the premises, ensuring that only authorized individuals enter the property.
  • Issue visitor passes and maintain records of visitors’ access.

4. Safety Protocols and Emergency Procedures:

  • Enforce safety protocols and emergency procedures among staff and visitors.
  • Conduct regular security drills, such as fire drills or evacuation exercises, to ensure preparedness in emergency situations.

5. Security Advice and Awareness:

  • Provide security advice and awareness training to staff and visitors to enhance their understanding of security precautions and procedures.
  • Stay informed about local security risks and advise management on potential security threats and improvements to security measures.

6. Liaison with Law Enforcement and Security Services:

  • Maintain a good working relationship with local law enforcement and other relevant security services.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; further training in security services is an advantage.
  • Proven experience as a security officer or in a similar security role.
